And the winner is …. or at least, the person that guessed closest is to what was scanned by our scanning electron microscope is …
AMANDA!
She guessed Taffey!
Great guess Amanda, it’s actually a starburst fruit chew. Congrats Amanda! You’ll be contacted directly and we’ll send you your USB stick and giftcard within the next few days!
It’s week 2 of “NAME THAT SAMPLE!”
Week 1 was pretty fun … we had some great guesses (and some not so great ones) … but all guesses/entries are encouraged.
This one is definitely a hard one. Whoever guesses correctly first will win a 1GB ASPEX USB STICK. (winner will be contacted via email) AND a $50 Giftcard to Amazon.com (we’re upping the stakes on this one since no oone has guessed correctly in over a week.)
Just comment below with your guess! The contest was supposed to end on Friday, but since no one has guessed correctly, we’re going to let it run for a few more days ..
UPDATE: December 19, 2009 – Noone has guessed correctly. A few people have come pretty close though. Let the guesses keep coming in!
UPDATE: December 22, 2009 – WE HAVE A WINNER! or someone that has answered pretty close … we will announce it later today! Our next NAME THAT SAMPLE campaign will start TONIGHT!

It’s some type of thorny plant stuck in something fiberglass.
copulating cockroach
Pizza crust
Mothball
A mushroom?
Page of a book
I think it’s Duct Tape (on the right) being removed from a freshly painted wall or maybe from the molding/trim that was supposed to stay paint free (on the left). The dark discoloration is either the tape glue that remained or the little bit of paint that always gets under the tape.
it’s a rose thorn stuck in a human’s skin
blutac/white tac getting peeled from a wall
some plant stem with a thron going ino something.
Or a rock
Some kind of plant stem witha thorn going into something. Or a rock. (correcting my spelling from my last post)
book binding, that’s thread going through a hardback (right), glue (?) on the left
Potato
Masking tape
Band aid / plaster removed from skin
i think its a sea shell
fur hair
Some tuberous flora and nubile root penetrating a fiber based medium.
caterpillar?
That looks like a cast (maybe plaster) being pulled from a fiberglass mold.
My guess is that this is some kind of a plant with pricks of thorns, trying to hold on, to travel far away and transport seeds.
I Think Its a crocodile & his leg is in mud & apart from it its an black white pic.
Expanding on my previous answer : Pizza Crust, Cheese, Box. Worth a try since some have come close.
I think that it is either silly putty or play doh. The one on the right is a ball of it and the left is a second part being pulled away. Either that or it is wall putty or caulk or whatever you call it.
Dung beetle with dung
maybe a skin scab been lifted off
its not fully healed so there’s a bit of live flesh still clinging on !
potato growing out of the ground
How about a tongue? The “thorn” is a papillae.
Latex paint being pulled off.
it looks like a bit of solder
plywood?
some piece of metal nailed to the wall
give me the first and the last letter hehehehe
mac and cheese!
a puffball
A caterpillar or a turnip
Yam.
It’d really help if we all had some sense of how big this thing is, what kind of microscopist publishes an image without a scale marker!?!
I think it’s the paper backing being pulled off of double stick tape.
Louse
cheese burger?
cheese and non-stick pan
i give up!
feces, belly, or mushroom
pyee01@gmail.com
a thumb that has been stung by a bee and is next to a vine with a thorn.
white fungus on tree bark

Its a bark of a tree being pulled off…Come on now give me the $50
a piece of wood
when will the winner be announced?
A flake of rust on a metal object.
